How to Format and Convert Structured Data Safely
Move between JSON, CSV, XML and TSV without losing structure or meaning.
Structured data is easy to move when every field is clean and predictable. A missing quote, inconsistent delimiter or unexpected line break can produce confusing results, so validation should come before conversion.
Keep an untouched source
Make a copy of the original data before editing. Work with a small sample that includes empty values, punctuation, non-Latin characters and the longest records.
Validate the structure
Format JSON or XML to reveal nesting and syntax errors. For CSV and TSV, confirm the delimiter, header row and text encoding. Decide how null values, dates and numbers should be represented.
Convert and compare
After conversion, compare the number of records and columns with the source. Spot-check special characters and multiline values. If the target format cannot represent a feature, choose an explicit fallback instead of silently dropping data.
Use readable intermediate files
Pretty formatting helps during review; minification is useful only when compact transfer matters. DTool provides focused formatters and converters so each step can be checked independently. Validation before and after conversion is the simplest way to protect data quality.
